Hip Daejeon walking tour

Meeting Point:  In front of 'Burger King' (fastfood restaurant) near the entrance of KTX train platforms (the 3rd floor of Seoul KTX train station). At 8:30 a.m.

Daejeon is one of Korea's most overlooked cities.

Most travelers see it as little more than a transportation hub to be gotten through as quickly as possible. Locals regard it as a nice enough place to live, but with little to recommend it as a destination. This is a shame, really. Daejeon's old downtown retains many reminders of the city's 20th century past, including the recently restored Art Deco governor's mansion and the grand provincial government building, one of Korea's most impressive pieces of contemporary architecture. And who can forget Sunsimdang, one of the country's oldest - and best loved - bakeries.

Moreover, downtown Daejeon has undergone something of a renaissance over the last several years. Whereas the city's older spaces were once seen as a liability, they are now seen as a resource. Young enterpreneurs are making downtown Daejeon cool, transforming older, often neglected properties into spaces of creativity. Suddenly, Daejeon has become cool.

This walking tour will focus on Daejeon's old downtown, particularly the area around Daejeon Station. The places we will visit include Soje Creating Community, a colonial era railway workers' village-turned-arts and culture space; Jeong-dong Village, a former red light district that now boasts galleries, workshops and other creative spaces; and Temiorae, Korea's only remaining colonial era "officials village," recently renovated into a cultural space.

The cost of the tour is KRW59,000 for members and for non-members KRW70,800.

We will travel to Daejeon by KTX. We will depart Seoul Station at 9:00 a.m. and arrive in Daejeon at 9:50 a.m. To return to Seoul, we will take the 6:22 p.m. KTX from Daejeon Station, which arrives at Seoul Station at 7:27 p.m.

We will meet at 8:30 a.m. Please be on time!

Train tickets are included in the cost of the excursion, but lunch is not.
